The solemn ceremony of presenting the Nobel Peace Prize took place in Oslo today. This year’s winners are:
founder of the Belarusian human rights center “Spring” Ales Byalyatsky, the Russian society “Memorial” and the Ukrainian “Center for Civil Liberties”. The Nobel Committee emphasized that they demonstrate the importance of civil society for peace and democracy. Oleksandra Matviychuk, chairman of the Center for Civil Liberties, said on the eve of the ceremony:
“We must break the circle of impunity. We must create an international tribunal and bring Putin, Lukashenko and other war criminals to justice, not only for the sake of Ukrainians, but also for the sake of other countries of the world.”
Yan Rachinsky, chairman of the Russian “Memorial”, called the awarding of the prize to human rights activists from three countries symbolic. This shows, he believes, that state borders should not divide civil society.
The third laureate, Ales Bialiatski, is imprisoned at home. His wife, Natalia Pinchuk, spoke on his behalf, quoting her husband’s statements about civil liberties and dictatorship, and conveying his call for peace.
