The Greeks thought about how they set the festive table

In a new study by sociologists, an attempt was made to study the culinary habits of the Greeks during the festive season of Christmas.

It’s no secret that the rising cost of living is a concern as people across the country start planning their holiday parties, but Greeks prefer to put food and family first.

Cookpad, the global recipe platform, shows in a Christmas food survey that 49% of Greeks will host at least one meal for people living outside their household either on Christmas Day or New Year’s Day, with another 40% planning to celebrate 2-3 times in December (with family, with friends, with a partner).

Most of all, people aged 50+ cook for family and friends on holidays, and 11% will cover as many as … 4 tables!

Christmas culinary worries as they relate between generations

The striking result of the survey is that the price of food this year for 29% of all respondents is the second biggest problem for the Greeks.

And when it comes to setting holiday tables and putting together a “delicious menu” that will satisfy the needs of their guests, is the first problem, reaching 40%.

How taste preferences differ across age groups

The majority of Greeks (77%) plan to prepare and serve traditional holiday food, which also proved popular among 35-49 year olds (80%).

The most popular meat is porkwhich remains the same taste preference in all age groups, but is more popular among 50+ (41%) than among young people under 35 (33%).

Geographic Differences: Food Costs in Different Regions

  • Cretans are most concerned about the cost of food this year (41%), with 57% still throwing more than one holiday party compared to the Greek average of 51%!
  • Greeks living in Thrace (16%) and Cyprus (17%) worry less about the cost of food, compared to 29% on average in Greece.

The survey was conducted in November 2022, in which participants were asked about their culinary habits during the holiday season. The sociological study was carried out in three European countries, in Greece, Spain and Hungary.

The survey, conducted in Greece, was attended by 933 people.
