Thunder from tear gas grenades and clouds of smoke covered the center of Athens shortly after 8 pm, after the completion of a procession in memory of Alexandros Grigoropoulos, who was killed 14 years ago by police officer Epaminondas Korkoneas.
After the bulk of the protesters left the Accademia area and the march headed towards the murder site on Messolonghiou Street in Exarchia, tensions erupted as police used tear gas to repel a group of protesters who set fire to five garbage cans on Emmanouil Benaki Street.
Chemicals were also used on Navarinou and Arachova streets, as some people threw Molotov cocktails at the police, according to police. But chemicals were also used in Omonia and Cannigos squares, when police used tear gas grenades to chase down protesters.
Until recently, according to media reports, 12 arrests were made.
Numerous groups of police officers on mopeds literally break into the crowd of fleeing people and snatch young people out of it.
Meanwhile, the Syntagma and Universitet metro stations are closed, and the latter has been closed since 9 am.
Tensions were also noted in Thessaloniki, where yesterday, after a severely wounded 16-year-old gypsy, there was also a tense atmosphere. The march in memory of Alexandros Grigoropoulos started from the Kamara area in an easterly direction, while shop windows in Tsimiski and Agia Sophia were also damaged when the police intervened with chemicals. The police detained at least 15 people.
