Memorial Day of Grigoropoulos: the center of Athens is closed – there are demonstrations (photo-video)

In the center of Athens, a large march is being held in honor of the 14th anniversary of the assassination of Alexis Grigoropoulos, in which labor collectives and parties representing the left and anti-authoritarian movement take part.

More than 7,000 people gathered at the center, and the police made a total of 24 arrests this morning during preliminary checks at the rally venues.

A group of “unknowns” in hoods threw a police motorcycle on the ground near the building of the Main State Accounting Department.

Thousands of people responded to the call of the left forces to mark the anniversary of the murder of 15-year-old Alexis by Greek police officer Epaminondas Korkoneas on the evening of December 6, 2008 in Exarchia.

At 21.00 in the evening, a rally will begin at the site of the death of a teenager in Exarchia, at the intersection of Messologiou and Tzavella streets.

As of this morning, more than 5,500 police officers are on the streets of the capital. Panepistimiou Street is closed, and thousands of police officers, fire trucks and water cannons are on duty in the streets around Omonia, University and Syntagma. Marches in memory of Alexis are also held in Thessaloniki and other cities.

Earlier in Athens and Thessaloniki marches of students and schoolchildren were held, which were attended by strong police units. The atmosphere this year is very tense, as just two days before the anniversary of Alexis’ murder, a police officer from the DIAS team in Thessaloniki shot a 16-year-old Romani teenager in the head, leading to many protests from relatives, friends and anarchists who joined them.

Hundreds of students, holding banners reading “These are the days of Alexis” and shouting slogans, demonstrated against “political terrorism and repression” in response to the death of a 16-year-old boy 14 years ago.
