A new early warning system from Google was activated in Greece during the recent earthquake on the island of Evia.
During quite noticeable tremors, which even felt in Athensmany Android mobile phone users received a notification from Google seconds before they realized there was an earthquake.
Google’s Earthquake Live system was tested in the United States, in a particularly earthquake-prone region of California, in the summer of 2020, with the goal that receiving an alert could save lives.
According to the company, the mobile phone device “detects” a vibration with characteristics related to an earthquake, then sends a signal to a special Google server, as well as the relative geopolitical location of the signal. The server then combines all the signals from many different smartphones over a wider area to determine if an earthquake is really happening.
How can you receive notifications
- Open the Settings app on your phone.
- Click “Security and Emergencies”. Earthquake alerts. If you don’t see the Security & Emergency section, tap Advanced Location. Earthquake alerts.
- Enable or disable the earthquake alert feature.
Important: You must have Wi-Fi or data enabled to receive the relevant notifications.
