The social network Twitter, which was recently acquired by billionaire Elon Musk, may be blocked by the European Union for non-compliance with established rules for content moderation.
Thierry Breton, head of European industry, had a video call with Musk on Nov. 30. He stated that Twitter could be blocked or fined up to 6% of global turnover in case of non-compliance with the rules, quotes THE FINANCIAL TIMES:
“Twitter must adhere to a control package of rules that includes ending an arbitrary approach to recovering banned users, aggressively spreading disinformation, and agreeing to a ‘wide independent audit’ of the platform until next year.”
The European Union also requires the provision of clear criteria on which users can be banned.
Elon Musk acquired the company Twitter Inc. (TWTR.N) for $44 billion in a deal that will transfer control of the most popular social media platform used by millions of users and celebrities around the world to the world’s richest man. “Freedom of speech is the foundation of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is a digital forum for discussing issues vital to the future of humanity,” said Elon Musk.
