Early Friday morning, unidentified persons set fire to a car belonging to a diplomat from the Italian embassy in Athens. The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the attack.
The car of the senior embassy adviser was parked in the parking lot of an apartment building in the suburb of Papagu in the north of the Greek capital. Police say the attackers approached an apartment building that had a car parked in the garage and set the car on fire with a flammable liquid. A bottle of flammable liquid, lighters and matches were found at the scene. The car was completely destroyed, and another parked nearby received minor damage. The fire department with 6 vehicles and 18 firefighters responded immediately and brought the blaze under control.

The attack is being investigated by the State Security Service.
The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs published statementwhich says:
“We unequivocally condemn yesterday’s attack on a car belonging to a member of the diplomatic staff of the Italian Embassy in Athens. Unacceptable and reprehensible acts such as those described above will in no way disturb the excellent relations and eternal bonds of friendship between Greece and its partner and ally Italy.”
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tagiani, who is visiting Athens as part of the EPP session, denounced the arson in a tweet: “The attack on the senior adviser of the Italian Embassy in Greece. I called Susanne Schlein to show my solidarity.”
“Today I will be in Athens to meet Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. I will visit the Italian Embassy,” he added.
