Red Square in Moscow lit up with festive lights

A Christmas market, festive illuminations and a skating rink in the center of the Russian capital – how do Muscovites feel about the fact that this is happening in the midst of hostilities in Ukraine?

Many of them support the war, although they hope for its soon end. Visitors to the skating rink expressed their joy at its opening and the hope that the war would end next year. Nadezhda, a resident of the Russian capital, says:

“Even during the Great Patriotic War, people still went to the theater, had a rest. This is all done for children.”

Muscovite Irina hopes for a quick victory:

“We hope that after all we will win, and the war will end soon, and all our guys will return home safe and sound, and there will be peace throughout the world.”

And Nikolai, a resident of the capital, approves of the opening of the skating rink, which contributes to “relaxation”:

“Now is a difficult time for everyone. Husbands and sons were taken away from many of the family. Well, somehow you need to relax yourself in order to feel good.”

Earlier, Sergei Sobyanin, the mayor of Moscow, said that the Russian capital, although it would refrain from fireworks and large-scale street concerts this year, would nevertheless celebrate the holidays brightly and elegantly.
