The number of victims of a landslide in Italy amounted to 7 people, among them children, the search continues for the missing

A landslide on the coast of the Gulf of Naples in Italy, descended due to heavy rains, claimed the lives of seven people – their bodies were found by rescuers.

How writes DW, among the dead on the Italian island of Ischia were three children – two aged 6 and 11, the third was a baby who died along with his parents. Rescuers are trying to find five more people. A state of emergency has been declared on the island, the rescue operation does not stop even for an hour, even at night.

From their homes, according to the prefect of Naples Claudio Palomba, 230 people were evacuated. All It happened the previous morning. The island received 120 mm of rain in just six hours, according to the weather service. Streams of water with mud and stones hit the town of Casamicciola Terme, where 8,000 people live.

Matteo Piantedosi, Italy’s interior minister, called the situation “very serious”. Search and rescue operations are difficult due to weather conditions. The Italian government has declared a state of emergency on the island and has allocated 2 million euros to eliminate the consequences of the natural disaster.

The disaster was exacerbated by construction in high-risk areas on the mountainous island, which is also in a seismically active area, experts said.

The mountainous island is a popular tourist destination due to its beautiful beaches and resorts. In 2017, an earthquake hit the city of Casamicciola. Despite the relatively small magnitude – 4 points on the Richter scale – two people died then, and the city suffered significant damage.
