Russian Embassy to the Government of Canada on LGBTQ+: “There is a man, a woman and children – this is called a family”

The Russian Embassy in Canada has responded with scathing comments to the Canadian government’s attacks on Moscow in connection with a new Russian federal law criminalizing the dissemination of LGBTQ+ propaganda in Russia.

Canadians should keep their “alien” beliefs to themselves, a diplomatic mission said on Saturday, reminding them that there are only two genders. The statement said: “There are two sexes, a man and a woman, together with children they make up a family.”

A new Russian law banning the promotion of non-traditional relationships, pedophilia and gender reassignment was adopted by the Russian State Duma on Thursday 24 November. Widely seen as a continuation of a 2013 law that banned the distribution of LGBT material to minors, it covers “both minors and adults.”

In Russia, you are free to be yourself and protect your children, while they are minors, from the imposition and stigmatization of aggressive propaganda.

The Embassy noted with surprise the publication of @CanadaFP in support of the statement of the so-called Equality Coalition regarding the adoption of a federal law of the Russian Federation aimed at preserving traditional values. And made a few comments in this regard:

“The new legislation prohibits the promotion of same-sex sexual relations or preferences, as well as pedophilia and information that encourages sex reassignment surgery. Canada and a number of other states that support the neoliberal agenda deliberately distort reality by confusing the concepts of individual sexual preferences and universal human rights. Fortunately, there are no universally recognized international documents that establish such a status for any relationship other than the traditional family arrangement (a kind reminder that we are considering a natural family of procreation, which refers to the social unit of two male and female parents, and their potential children).

It is important to repeat that in the Russian Federation there is no discrimination against the rights of sexual and other minorities. However, it is well known that the freedom of a person ends where the freedom of another person begins. We believe that the promotion of non-traditional relationships, not to mention their criminally prosecuted perverted forms (such as pedophilia), it infringes on the rights of the traditional majority of Russian citizens who want to protect themselves and their children from the imposition of commandments alien to them in spiritual and moral values.

Finally, the Embassy would like to recall the famous quote by former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau that “the state has no place in the bedrooms of the nation.” Now it would be very timely to supplement it with an equally important remark: “there is no place for a bedroom in the government.” The individual sexual preferences of adults and the details of their relationship should remain strictly personal. This should not become a political issue, much less a topic on the agenda of international relations.

Our country does not interfere in the internal affairs of Canada. Decisions in this area should be made by Canadian authorities and citizens. We expect from Justin Trudeau’s cabinet an appropriate respectful attitude towards the legislative process in Russia, based on the state policy of preserving and strengthening traditional values and the will of the Russian people”.

Foreign Affairs Canada summoned Russian Ambassador Oleg Stepanov on Monday in connection with tweets from the Russian diplomatic mission that contained homophobic statements. About this in a comment to the publication The National Post Emily Williams, spokeswoman for Canadian Foreign Minister Emily Williams, said: “It’s no surprise that Russians have once again opted for hate propaganda. This is an attack on Canadian values of acceptance and tolerance. Minister (Canadian Foreign Affairs Melanie) Joly instructed the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs to call the Russian ambassador to inform him of this.”

Since last Thursday, the Russian Embassy in Canada has been spreading anti-LGBTQ+ messages on its social media. In one, the embassy asked Canada’s Sports Minister Pascal Saint-Onge, who is openly gay, to “explore and explain” how she “came into this world.” The tweet was accompanied by an image of the Romanov family, who ruled Russia until their execution in 1918.

The tweets from the Russian embassy have sparked a flurry of criticism both in Canada and abroad, which has been going on for several days. It should be noted that this is not the first time that Russian embassies have sharply commented on the topic of LGBT.
