Kazakh apple, symbol of Almaty, immortalized in Greece

In the north-eastern part of the Athens metropolis, in the Aharne-Menidi area, a grand opening of the monument in honor of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Kazakhstan and Greece took place.

An original bronze monument of its kind is made in the shape of an apple*, personifying its ancestral home, Kazakhstan, framed in an olive branch, which since ancient times in Greece is considered a symbol of peace and prosperity.

The initiative of the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Greece was supported by the Mayor of Aharne, Spyridon Vrettos. By unanimous decision of the deputies of the local city council, a place was allocated for the monument on the central square, directly opposite the city hall building.

In the Acharne region, which is also called Menidi, is located 11 km from the center of Athens, it is densely populated by more than 30 thousand Pontic Greeks, from families deported to Kazakhstan after the Second World War and returned to their historical homeland.

In his welcoming speech, Ambassador Yerlan Baudarbek-Kozhatayev noted that the monument is an example of “people’s diplomacy” and a vivid example of the continuous cultural connection between Kazakhstan and Greece.

The project was implemented with the sponsorship of DKG Development, founded by natives of Kazakhstan, now citizens of Greece, father and son Ioannis and Konstantin Petridis.
