New important finds during the excavations of ancient Antissa on Mytilini

During the ongoing excavations of the Office of Antiquities of Lesbos in ancient Antissa, located in the west of the island, and one of the six city-states of antiquity, interesting artifacts have been discovered.

A video titled “Discovery of Ancient Antissa Lesbos”, released by the Archeology Department in the context of advancing excavations funded by the North Aegean Region Public Investment Program, tells of the discovery of important and interesting statue fragments of historical value.

According to the head of the Department and the head of the excavations, Pavlos Triantafillidis, among other finds, a marble head of a statue of the Goddess of Health (Gygea) of the 3rd century BC was discovered. and an iron grip from the 14th century AD, which was apparently used to protect the Byzantine castle of Agia Theodora, identified with ancient Antissa.

The two finds were reportedly “found next to each other, east of the central gate, at the stone staircase of the corridor of the medieval walls.” And according to the archaeological service, “they were safely hidden under a pile of stones when the walls of the medieval castle fell in 1462, during a siege by the Ottomans.”

It should be noted here that, as recently reported by the Ministry of Culture, during the same excavations at the base of the Byzantine gate of the castle of Agia Theodora, a fallen part of a marble slab 3.50 meters long was discovered. It depicts in relief the coats of arms of the Gateluso dynasty, as well as the Palaiologoi, which until today have been known by analogues of the medieval castle of Mytilene.
