The Economist writes that a surge in deaths in European countries is expected this winter. Among the main reasons are energy prices, weather conditions and epidemics.
Edition recallsthat, as a rule, from December to February, weekly mortality in European countries increases by 21% compared to the summer months. Now, with the significant impact of rising energy prices on this indicator, a warm winter could lead to 32,000 more deaths than the historical average, while a colder winter could cause 335,000 additional deaths.
According to experts, the temperature regime and seasonal flu will have the strongest impact on mortality. The authors of the publication refer to scientists’ data, according to which the colder the weather, the stronger the influence of this factor: a 10% increase in electricity prices increases the mortality rate by 0.6%.
Earlier, our publication reported that, thanks to the warm weather that has persisted in Europe in recent weeks, the region will be able to avoid deficit natural gas this winter. Against the backdrop of a gradual cooling, Europe is trying to use the gas pumped into storage facilities as economically as possible in the face of supply uncertainty.
The Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy announced on Friday on subsidies for electricity and natural gas for December.
