Government announces electricity and natural gas subsidies for December

The Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy announced on Friday the subsidies for electricity and natural gas for December.

The electricity subsidy for households and businesses is based on monthly consumption, while the natural gas subsidy is only for households and is horizontal, i.e. does not depend on the size of the dwelling or supplier. They will apply from 1 December 2022. It is recalled that the electricity subsidy applies to all primary and non-primary residences, with no income criterion and regardless of supplier.

Electricity subsidy

households

  • With monthly consumption up to 500 kWh the subsidy will amount to 221 EUR/MWh. This category includes 90% of households in Greece.
  • With monthly consumption 501–1000 kWh the subsidy is 171 EUR/MWh. However, if a household reduces its average daily consumption by 15% compared to the corresponding month of the previous year, the subsidy is increased by 50 EUR/MWh.
  • For monthly consumption above 1001 kWh the subsidy is 81 EUR/MWh. This concerns only 2% of households in Greece. And in this scale, an additional subsidy of 50 €/MWh is applied with a 15% reduction in consumption.
  • For households included in the Household Social Tariff (KOT), the subsidy covers almost 100% of the increase and amounts to 269 EUR/MWh.

The total amount of household subsidies in December is 282 million euros.

Subsidy for commercial consumers

  • For commercial customers up to 35 kVA and consumption up to 2000 kWh, the subsidy for December is 183 EUR/MWh.
  • For professional and commercial consumers up to 35 kVA that exceed 2000 kWh, as well as for all other low-medium and high-voltage non-domestic tariffs, the subsidy is 34 EUR/MWh.
  • For farmers, the subsidy is horizontal and amounts to 221 EUR/MWh.

The total amount of electricity subsidies in December for households and businesses is 435 million euros. Most of the amount comes from taxing the excess income of electricity producers, which the Greek government has introduced since July last year, which has generated more than 2.5 billion euros to date.

Natural gas subsidy for households

DEPA Emporias, in collaboration with other providers, will provide a horizontal subsidy in EUR 15 per thermal MWh for all household consumers. The measure targets 700,000 household consumers, regardless of income, size of residence or service provider.

Examples of subsidies

The ministry has examples of how a subsidy will ease electricity bills.

  1. Household with an average monthly consumption of 400 kWh/month: bill without subsidy 152 euros, with subsidy 64 euros.
  2. Household with an average monthly consumption of 700 kWh/month: bill without subsidy 266 euros, with subsidy 121 euros, if the consumption saving is 15%, then 111 euros.
  3. Household with an average monthly consumption of 1200 kWh/month: bill without subsidy 456 euros, with subsidy 244 euros or 200 euros with 15% savings.

PS. Do you remember how you used to pay 30 euros per month with an average consumption of 300-400 kWh? I’ve already forgotten…
