Metro to Ilion will change the status of Western Attica

A tender will be announced in the coming weeks for the extension of Line 2 to Ilion. Where will the new stations be located, the expert said.

The tender for the extension of Line 2 of the metro to Ilion is expected to be announced during December, as noted by the Managing Director and Vice President of the Board of Attiko Metro in his speech at the “Athens Investment Forum”. The cost of the project is expected to reach 500,000 euros, and funding will be provided by including it in ΕΣΠΑ 2021-2027

Recall that the extension of the Red Line to Western Attica includes a 4 km long line and three new stations: Palatiani, Ilion and Agios Nikolaos.

Where will the stations be located?

Two of the three stations are located on Fivon Street. Palatiani station will be located approximately 1300m north of Antoupoli station and Ilion station 1000m north of the former. The third station, Agios Nikolaos, will be located on the street of the same name in Ilion.

With the completion of the project passenger traffic will be an additional 51,000 passengers per day, while moving from the center of Athens to Western Attica and back will be carried out in record time. The Ilion-Syntagma route will take only 20 minutes, and the Ilion-Omonia route will take 15 minutes. The project is expected to be completed approximately 4 years after the start of work.

Later, the “red line” will continue to Acharnes with intermediate stations Kamatero and Ano Liosia-Zefiri. The “maturation” of this subway line extension is at a very early stage and is therefore expected to be difficult to complete in the current decade.
