Massive rescue operation to rescue 500 migrants off the coast of Chania

A major rescue operation is underway 18 nautical miles south of Palaiochora Chania, with up to 500 migrants reportedly on board a fishing boat.

A tanker, two bulk carriers, two Italian fishing vessels, a Coast Guard patrol boat and a Navy frigate are already on site. A call for assistance came after midnight to the European number 112, the message said that there were five hundred people on the ship.

According to the Athens News Agency, at the venue rescue operation a strong wind is blowing – up to 7 points on the Beaufort scale.
