Greece plans to introduce a “panic button” to combat gender and domestic violence. The corresponding bill was submitted for voting at the plenary session of the Parliament on Thursday.
Panic Button is an app installed on smartphones that alerts the police to cases of domestic violence. After pressing the “panic button”, a short text message (SMS) will be sent to the appropriate center, two of them will be set up in Attica and Thessaloniki, where a pilot program will be active first.
The bill in Parliament addresses cases of domestic violence involving a threat or danger to life or physical integrity, with the aim of immediate police intervention.
The right to register in the application during the pilot work of the program are female victims of domestic violence living in the Attica region and the regional office of Thessaloniki. After the completion of the pilot application, the Panic Button program will be evaluated by the competent services of the Ministries of Labor and Social Affairs and the Protection of Citizens.
More information about the Panic Button app will be available once the competent authorities start using it.
