Stately mansions in Athens revisited "will shine"

223 apartment buildings, 67 mansions and 78 closed (abandoned) buildings will be qualitatively renovated under the program “Facade” (“Πρόσοψη”).

The first tangible results of the program can now be seen in the center and surroundings of Athens by residents and visitors of the city. The facades of buildings, until recently covered with “age-old dust” and graffiti, will shine again and acquire their unique majestic appearance, becoming the way they were originally conceived and built. The program is aimed at restoring the damage of time, preserving and updating the aesthetics of the facades of the capital’s buildings.

According to the municipality of Athens, the interest of the Athenians in “transforming” the facades of their buildings is quite high. More than 400 applications have been submitted to date, absorbing 100% of the campaign’s original budget (1.7 million euros), which has been increased by 1 million euros to benefit more citizens. 223 apartment buildings, 67 individual houses and 78 closed buildings have already fallen under the “umbrella” of the program. Applications to join the program are approved within a month, with the grant disbursed to beneficiaries promptly upon submission of final supporting documents.

Green light for nine out of ten applications

To date, 91% of those interested, that is, 368 property owners, have already received the “green light” to carry out work on the aesthetic and functional modernization of buildings. All private buildings within the municipality of Athens, i.e. detached houses, semi-detached, multi-family and listed buildings, can be included in the program. It provides for a maximum subsidy amount of 6,000 euros per building, while, especially for listed buildings, the subsidy can be up to 7,200 euros per building.

How and where to apply

Applications are ongoing and will close when available resources are exhausted. Applications and related procedures are carried out by a private engineer selected by the citizen through TEE e-services, with absolute transparency and control. In essence, the engineer chosen by the beneficiary will not just carry out the process, but will monitor the implementation of the interventions, take care of obtaining the necessary permits and approvals, and will quantitatively and qualitatively check the work performed for the payment of the subsidy.

For their part, building owners wishing to join the program must remove individual antennas, as well as illegal advertising and professional signage on building facades.
