Explore Athens: New Audiovisual Walks with Google Technology

The Greek Ministry of Tourism, the Municipality of Athens and Google announced on Thursday a new and innovative way to explore Athens on foot, based on audio-visual walks.

Curated audiovisual walks are included in the book “Athens: The City Museum”, available on the website athens.withgoogle.com.

On the site, users can see a map showing a series of walks and stops showcasing the city’s street art, music, food, and architecture, as well as an opportunity to explore areas off the route.

By visiting the site athens.withgoogle.comthe visitor can choose a proposed route through the center of Athens, including audio description and video recording of key places along the way.

For example, Audio walk 1 includes material on the changing cultural landscape of Athens, from underground skate shops to street art culture and the ever-evolving Omonia Square.

Audio walk 1 explores the areas of Metaxourgeio – Kerameikos – Psirri – Omonia Square.

  • Total distance2.4 km
  • Estimated walking time (including audio recording) 2 hours
  • Number of stops 10
  • Audiovisual walks are presented in Greek and English.

The campaign also aims to highlight the attractiveness of Athens as a year-round destination. The partnership of the Ministry of Tourism of Greece and the City of Athens with Google was initiated by tourism specialists in the spring of 2022. Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias said the announcement “follows the strategic partnership we have launched with Google on sustainable tourism since April 2022” and the walks are part of the “Athens City Museum” plan.

The minister called this latest set of walks an “innovative initiative” that will open up Athens to a more personal tourist experience and show less obvious sights in a modern and innovative way. There is only one walk so far, but the developers promise to expand these routes…

It is worth noting that a similar project was implemented 3 years ago by the author of the publication. Unfortunately, it didn’t get an extension.
