Convenient service or "concentration camp": total surveillance cameras will appear in the subway

Under the watchful eye of “Big Brother”, the Thessaloniki metro routes and line 4 in Athens will be operated, which will increase the safety of passengers.

Two important transport projects were launched in Athens and Thessaloniki, which for many years have been a constant requirement of passengers. These are the long-suffering Thessaloniki metro and line 4 of the Athens metro, which, although at a different stage, will make a significant contribution to reducing traffic congestion and facilitating the movement of citizens. At the same time, they will have some common features, mainly trains without drivers (they will move in the absence of the driver) and the presence of automatic doors on the platforms, which will automatically open when the train arrives for boarding (and disembarking) passengers.

However, the modern nature of the transformation of the subway is not limited to this. As Nikos Kouretas, CEO of Attiko Metro, mentioned a few hours ago from the hall of the Palladian Conference on Digital Transformation of Public and Private Sector Manufacturing, the stations and tracks of both Thessaloniki Metro and Line 4 in Athens will be equipped with high-end cameras that will “comb” all 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, acting as … the watchful eye of “Big Brother”.

In particular, the role of cameras, which will provide full coverage of the territory, will be performed against the backdrop of preventing unpleasant incidents and increasing the sense of safety of passengers. The cameras will be able to recognize objects, identify people, and be able to “distinguish” if an incident has occurred that requires immediate attention, such as a fire. The train’s cameras (inside the cars) will transmit live video to the control center.

Cameras will also be installed at the front of the trains, which will “monitor” the tunnel and, with the help of sophisticated software, will be able to recognize the presence of people and objects. Finally, it is worth noting that the saved images will comply with the European protocol for the protection of personal data. Recall that the first section of the 4th metro line (Alsos Veikou Goudi) will be completed in 2029, and the Thessaloniki metro – at the end of 2023.
