Bakers and the Greek Ministry of Development are considering the possibility of creating a “housewife’s basket”, that is, the opportunity to get baked goods from the bakeries in the neighborhood at a reduced price.

The proposal for a “household basket”, which is currently taking its final form and is expected to premiere on November 2, was discussed during a visit by a delegation of the Hellenic Bakers’ Federation to the Ministry of Development and Investment.

“At this meeting, Mr. Georgiadis suggested that we, as bakeries, make our own “basket”. It’s a challenging project, but I personally think it’s a good idea,” Elsa Koukumeria, Vice President of the Hellenic Bakers’ Federation and President of Thessaloniki Bakers, told iefimerida.gr.

At the same meeting, the bakers “asked the minister explicitly indicate in the “housewife’s basket” that the bread that the supermarkets will give is frozen. There is no reason for it to look artificially fresh, because it doesn’t. It must be indicated that bread in supermarkets is made from frozen dough“. Bakers note that the cheapest bread available in supermarkets costs more than 5 euros per kilogram and more expensive than freshly baked bread in a bakery.

Thus, following the results of the meeting at the ministry, the list of products in the “housewife’s basket” (for supermarkets) in terms of bakery products will include toast, crackers and frozen bread.

According to the president of the bakers of Thessaloniki, since 2010 bakers have had “the basket”, which is now being compiled in agreement with the state. “In all the difficulties that were in this long-suffering country, the bakery helped and helps everyone who was in need. The same will exists today, when we see a monstrous increase in electricity prices. Last year I paid 1000 euros for electricity, and now 1780 euros, an increase of 178%,” says Ms. Kukumeria.

According to her, “There are 14,000 bakeries in Greece, and it is difficult to do something that is common for everyone, that is, to group them together and make a “basket”, since we do not have packaged products. It might be easier to do it at the county level.” In addition, Ms. Cucumeria adds, “there is a fear that the buyer will ask us: “Last year you sold bread for 1 euro, now for 0.80. When did you rob me, then or now?” But I repeat that this a good idea and it would be nice if it came to fruition.”

When asked what products can be contained in the “basket” of bakers, Elza Kukumeria emphasizes: “I will answer you based on the logic of thinking that we have. We in Thessaloniki have a bagel (bagel) which is a breakfast staple. This is one of the products that could fall into this “basket”. Let’s see if it should be a little different, a little lighter in weight. The second could be classic bread, and the third could be a pie or some kind of mini-package, like a bag of three cheese pies (tiropites).”
