Greece proposed to build power lines to Austria and Germany

Greece has submitted a proposal to build a transmission line with Austria and Germany, with an initial capacity of 3.0 gigawatts, Environment and Energy Minister Kostas Skrekas said at a forum on renewable energy and storage on Thursday.

“This is not an easy project, but there is a big need for green energy in the south of Germany that Greece can provide,” Skrekas said, adding that the transmission line capacity could reach 9.0 gigawatts at a later stage. Greece is already planning to double or triple the capacity of existing connections to Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Albania and Italy.

Regarding price gouging by electricity suppliers, Skrekas has clearly warned that excessive and unjustified profits will be seized and returned to consumers. He also mentioned the progress in installing renewable energy in the country, while other speakers praised Greece’s efforts in this area, but noted the need for investment in production units and networks, simpler licensing procedures and a new structure to support hybrid installations, which combine wind, solar and storage.

It should be noted that Greece plans to receive this “green” energy for export from Egypt. But since Turkey did not give the go-ahead for laying the cable through the self-proclaimed EEZ, the project stalled. Greece does not agree with Turkish claims (quite rightly), Turkey blocks the work of cable-laying ships with military courts. How the story will end is still unknown.
