Details of the rape of a woman in the police station of Athens

Two police officers from the DIAS Motorcycle Rapid Response Unit were charged with the rape of a 19-year-old woman at the Omonia police station on the night of 11 October.

The police officers, aged 24 and 27, were detained on October 15 in the morning by officers from the Internal Investigation Department of the police. Both suspects deny the allegations, claiming the sex was consensual. It is reported that on Wednesday, October 19, they were released on bail and suspended from work.

As we reported previously, a young woman was confronted by police near the ISAP train station in Thissio, in the center of Athens, where they asked her to accompany them to the Omonia police station at 23:30. The woman arrived at Omoniya station and followed three of the four policemen who were on duty inside. It is unclear why they asked her to come to the police station and what they discussed.

With reference to sources cathimerini notes that when the woman asked to go to the toilet, she was taken to the basement near the officers’ locker room, where she was sexually assaulted by the alleged perpetrators. The woman left the police station in shock and told her friend what had happened. The next morning she visited a doctor who examined her and urged her to report the incident to the police. The woman filed a complaint with the Patission police station and then filed a complaint with the central police station.

Investigators determined that the police station’s security camera was disabled, but footage from a camera at a nearby hotel confirms the victim’s entry and exit from the police station. They also found and confiscated the chest camera of one of the alleged perpetrators in a closet. One of the policemen supposedly filmed what was happening on a uniformed camera.

The prosecutor’s office is looking into indicting two other off-duty officers who corroborated the defendant’s allegations.
