Crete: missing woman in Agia Pelagia found dead

A woman who disappeared in the area of Agia Pelagia during the weather cataclysms that hit Crete has been found dead.

According to the ERT channel, her body was found between the bay of Agia Pelagia and Lygaria, in a rocky area, among the mountains of debris left by the hurricane. The body was discovered by a fire brigade drone.

As a reminder, on the morning of 15/10, shortly after 10:30, heavy rains hit the prefecture of Heraklion, mainly Agia Pelagia and Lygaria. The downpour caused flooding, the extent of which is evidenced by the extent of the damage to infrastructure.

In Agia Pelagia and Lygaria, a terrible picture of destruction was recorded: cars were swept away (some even into the sea), and roads turned into rivers, “drown” in the mud. Problems also arose at the Heraklion airport, where the runways were flooded. Catastrophic road damage has been recorded in the northern part of Crete (in particular, in Agia Pelagia), both due to heavy rain and landslides.

The message from the 112 service came with a delay of 9 hours. In it, the services warned of dangerous weather events in the next 24 hours in some specific areas. The services urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and follow the instructions of the authorities.

The missing person was a 45-year-old mother of two children. According to the neakriti.gr information received from the husband of the missing, his wife was in the same car where the body of a 50-year-old man was found, who did not manage to get out alive, when a downpour and a stream of water of extraordinary strength, which turned the roads in Agia Pelagia into rivers, carried away his vehicle, causing his death.

When the storm broke, the deceased was talking on the phone with his wife and during their conversation allegedly told her that the water had reached the windows of the car, which he had closed. When the water covered the vehicle, the mobile phone turned off.

Divers from the 3rd EMAK and the Coast Guard, as well as aerial tracking systems (using drones) also participated in the operation to search for the woman.

When the body was found, the operation to free it from a pile of debris and rubble proved to be very difficult. The woman’s body was reportedly spotted in the bay of Agia Pelagia Ligaria.
