Winter resort Kalavriton: new chalets and powerful ski lift

Recently, active sports and recreation have become widespread in Greece. If in spring and summer it is rafting, kayaking and mountaineering, then in winter it is skiing.

Despite the fact that even in winter there is little snow in Greece, every year more and more ski resorts appear here, where you can ski to the fullest, and just relax in the mountains shrouded in snow.

In Kalavryta, a place famous for its ski resort, modernization work will begin.

“The work to improve the facilities of the Kalavryta ski center, which is a municipal enterprise, is a comprehensive project, one of the largest implemented in recent years. That is why we believe that when the work is completed, the traffic of visitors will increase, which will positively affect the local economy and the further development of the area,” said Alexis Agrios, director of the Kalavriton ski center.

In an interview with the Athens Macedonian News Agency, he said: “Last ski season was the best in the history of the ski resort, as we saw an increase in turnover of more than 100%, including in catering, entertainment facilities, as well as from sales of tickets for the ski slope . Moreover, the number of tickets sold reached approximately 100,000. In general, according to our estimates, the number of people who came to us for vacation exceeded 250,000 people.”

As regards the project for lift modernization, Alexis Agrios told APE-MPE that “we are now in the final stage.” As the director emphasizes, “we hope that if all the approval procedures are completed within the time frame we expect, then at the end of the upcoming winter season, that is, in April 2023, work will begin.”

Why do you need a ski lift? Yes, everything is very simple! In order not to waste time and energy on climbing, but to focus only on skiing from the slopes of the mountains. With the help of lifts, in a short time you can move several kilometers over mountain ranges, abysses, forests, and rugged terrain. And on the other hand, lifts protect the environment, allowing you to leave untouched mountain landscapes. To an inexperienced skier, these devices may seem complicated. But it is worth climbing them several times, and the uncertainty passes..

Regarding the projects that will be implemented in the Kalavryta ski center, Alexis Agrios said: “The modern equipment will include the replacement of two central lifts, namely the Achilleas and the Stig. In particular, “Achilleas” will be a ten-seat removable cabin for transporting visitors and skiers from the base to the center of the ski resort, and “Stiga” – a six-seat removable chair for transportation from the center to the top of the ski resort. This means that the capacity of these two central “elevators” is quadrupled, and the delivery (movement) time is reduced by about 80%. For example, now the Stiga climbs to the top in 16-17 minutes, and after the upgrade, the path will be only five minutes.”

The director of the ski resort also said: “At the moment, each lift can serve from 800 to 1000 people per hour, and after modernization – more than 2000 people.”

In addition, according to Alexis Agrios, “the project also includes the construction of a new substation, which will provide energy for the operation of all modern facilities, and a generator will be installed so that work does not stop in the event of an accident or a power outage“. At the same time, he adds that “in the center of the ski center will be built new chalet with balconies around the perimeter and panoramic views of the entire Corinthian Gulf. Some other work will also be carried out at the ski center, such as the installation of snow barriers.”
