With firewood and fuel oil prices skyrocketing, as well as natural gas problems, the Greek population is trying to figure out the cheapest way to keep warm this winter, which experts say will be even more difficult than in years past.
However, few people can imagine that an alternative solution to fuel oil, natural gas and firewood can be the easiest way – to use air conditioning (split system with heating function), despite a significant increase in the price of electricity.
According to Nikos Musiopoulos, professor at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Energy at ΑΠΘ (Thessaloniki), this way to keep warm may well be … profitable.
The expert noted that now we have enough electricity from renewable energy sources in our country to be able to safely use air conditioners (split systems with heating function) in central and southern Greece. But also “during periods of not so low temperatures, even in northern Greece, anyone who has modern energy-saving (starting with class A ++) household appliances installed in their home can well use them,” says the professor.
Split system air conditioner – the most profitable solution compared to using natural gas and oil. There is no need to heat the whole house. Where the family is during the day, the device should be turned on at + 19-20 degrees, not higher.
“Well, for those who have old air conditioners installed, using them will be unprofitable, since they consume electricity almost twice as much as energy-saving ones. Although you need to be realistic – on very cold days of winter, we still will not be able to do without the use of firewood and natural gas, ”the professor concluded.
