Baru Pass: driving through the most beautiful road in Greece, you will feel like you are flying in the clouds

The Baros Pass, the most beautiful road in Greece and one of the most impressive roads in Europe, running at an altitude of 2000 meters, is located in Greece.

The Andes and towering passes, the Carpathians, the crossing of the Alps, roads reaching into the sky at unimaginable heights, unique flora and fauna – all this together is located in Greece, a few hours drive from Athens.

A unique ride on an asphalt road takes place at an altitude of 2000 meters. And this is really something that can quite impress your imagination. Greek roads are full of surprises, and the Baros Pass (πέρασμα του Μπάρου) has perhaps the most of them. The road exists in Greece and is awe-inspiring, especially when viewed from above. The reason is the so-called neck (serpentine) of Baros.

Get ready for… a relentless spin. The road winds like a snake through gorges, dense forests and steep slopes. Starting from Kalambaki, the “adrenaline adventure” starts in the village of Aspropotamos and culminates in the isthmus of Baros, one of the few accessible mountain “passes” from Thessaly to Epirus, from the villages of Trikala to the settlements of Tsoumerki. In the very heart of Pindos, in the place where the multi-peak Kakarditsa (πολύκορφη Κακαρδίτσα) meets Mount Peristeri (το βουνό Περιστέρι), there is one of the most difficult passes of Pindos, known for terrible snowstorms that begin without warning even in spring.

The Baros mountain pass is one of the three passes of Pindos and is located on the southern side of the mountain range. The road connects Anthousa and Haliki (Thessaly) with Kalarrites and Matsuki (Epirus), the route passes at a very high altitude, in some places exceeding 2000 meters.

Old locals and even today younger Vlach speakers call this area Pasha Mparou (Passa Mparou), also known as “Pass Baros”, which was named after a local shepherd who discovered the passage in the mountains, driving flocks of sheep .

Over time, but especially after the Civil War (Εμφύλιο πόλεμο), the place became empty… Later, roads were opened that connected the villages of Tsumerki with Arta and Ioannina, the villages of Aspros with Trikala and Kalambaka. Under the new circumstances, the Baros mountain pass “has fallen into disuse” and has been forgotten by everyone.

Nevertheless, today this road is asphalted (in November 2014, the construction of the last unpaved section was completed). So, if the weather is mild in autumn and sunny (and in winter after the prefectural snowplow has passed), you can even drive a regular car here. A unique life experience awaits you.
