Macron comes under fire for claiming Russia’s response to possible nuclear strike

French President Emmanuel Macron has been criticized for revealing plans for a Western response to a Russian nuclear strike.

Writes about it Politico, citing critical reviews of well-known politicians. It all started with Macron’s statement that if Russia uses nuclear weapons against Ukraine, France’s response will certainly not be nuclear. His words were commented by ex-president Francois Hollande:

“The credibility of nuclear deterrence lies in not saying exactly what we could do. It’s better to say as little as possible and be ready to do as much as possible.”

Jean-Louis Thierryo, deputy and vice-president of the Defense Committee of the National Assembly (the lower house of parliament), said he “almost fell out of his chair” after Macron’s words:

“This is a political mistake. One of the principles of nuclear deterrence is to remain vague about what (the state) considers to be vital interests.”

And Bruno Tertre, deputy head of the Strategic Research Foundation analytical center, believes that it would be more correct for Macron to say that he “will not play this game. In any case, Putin must know that he is losing.” He reproached the President of France and the Minister of Defense of Britain – for “revealing the cards” in the nuclear confrontation with the Russian Federation.

Recall that on October 12, Emmanuel Macron, in response to a live host’s question, said that France would not use nuclear weapons against Russia if it launched a nuclear strike on Ukraine. And he noted that he does not want a Third World War, and assistance to Ukraine is aimed at restoring its territorial integrity, Ukraine must regain control over its territories within the 1991 borders.
