Ukraine is applying for NATO membership on an accelerated basis. Russia holds a hand on the nuclear button

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky signed an application for the country’s accession to NATO in an expedited manner. Earlier, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced today, September 30, at 19:00 a press conference. Her topic was not named.

“De facto, we have already passed our way to NATO. De facto, we have already proven compatibility with the standards of the alliance. They are real for Ukraine – real on the battlefield and in all aspects of our interaction,” the president said.

So far, Moscow is announcing the annexation of 4 Ukrainian territories. In Kyiv, Zelensky signs an accelerated application for NATO membership.

Zelensky’s statement was made after a meeting of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine. Volodymyr Zelenskyy understands that a decision on formal admission to NATO takes time and consensus. Therefore, until the moment when Ukraine becomes a member of NATO, the president proposed signing a collective security agreement for Kyiv. The draft agreement was recently presented by Andriy Yermak, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine.

To join NATO, it is necessary to obtain the support of all 30 member countries of the alliance. Earlier, after requesting Finland and Sweden to join NATO, Turkey expressed its disagreement. Ankara set a number of conditions and then gave its consent. In addition, the rules of the alliance prohibit the admission of countries with unresolved territorial disputes.

This is a move of maximum escalation on the part of Kyiv, since if this request is accepted, an attack on the rest of Ukraine controlled by Kyiv would be considered an attack on NATO under Article 5 on collective defense. Also, an attack by Kyiv on territories that have fallen under the territory of Russia will be considered by Russia as an attack by a NATO member state.

As the Russian president himself warned, Russia will use all means at its disposal, including nuclear weapons, to protect the territories that were included in its composition.

Today, September 30, on official website legal information published a decree of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin dated September 29, 2022 on the recognition by Russia of the independence of the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions.

The document says:

“In accordance with the generally accepted principles and norms of international law, recognizing and confirming the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples, enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, taking into account the will of the people of the Kherson region at the referendum held on September 27, 2022, I decide: Recognize the sovereignty and independence of the Kherson region” .

The second decree similarly recognizes the independence of the Zaporozhye region. The ceremony of signing agreements on the entry into Russia of four new territories – the DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, took place today in the Kremlin.

September 13 Kyiv made public a draft international treaty that would provide Ukraine with unprecedented security guarantees by the world’s leading powers. The ten-page document basically assumes the strengthening of the military power of Ukraine and the increase in its armed forces.

It follows from the agreement that the USA, Great Britain, Germany, France, Turkey and other countries must make tough commitments. Their common goal should be to strengthen the Ukrainian armed forces so that they can resist Russia. The Ukrainian side also stated that guarantees should not be declarative, but legally binding.

The above countries have not yet signed this agreement.

On February 28, Ukraine filed application for membership in the European Union. On June 9, the European Parliament called for granting Ukraine the status of candidate member EU. On June 23, the Council of the EU agreed on the status of a candidate for Ukraine, but stated that this is a long way, several years long, since the accelerated way, according to the EU leadership does not exist. Offer to provide Ukraine “interim” membership in EU made June 5 Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer.
