During a tour of the Gulf countries, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz agreed on the supply of liquefied gas from the UAE to Germany and signed a corresponding agreement in Abu Dhabi.
According to Al-Arabiya, Olaf Scholz signed an agreement in the field of energy security and industrial development with the President of the Emirates, Sheikh Muhammad bin Zayed Al Nahyan. At the same time, the oil and gas company Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) signed a contract for the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Germany by RWE.
It is expected that at the end of this year, tankers will begin delivering fuel to the Brunsbuttel terminal on the North Sea coast. According to the chancellor, in order to ensure the security of Germany and the rejection of Russian energy carriers, Berlin plans to further expand the list of alternative suppliers. He declared:
We are going to take the most reasonable way, namely, to concentrate on cooperation with many regions. This will allow us to ensure the supply of energy resources. And for us to depend on one supplier and on his decisions, this will definitely not happen again.
The Emirates are currently already supplying diesel to Germany: in 2023, Germany expects to receive up to a quarter of a million tons of this fuel.
On the eve of the signing of gas agreements, Total Energies signed a contract to develop an LNG terminal and expand gas production from the world’s largest field in Qatar. The leadership of the French company noted that this is a long-term strategic project designed to strengthen European energy security. The investment is estimated at $1.5 billion.
On Saturday, the German chancellor visited Saudi Arabia. Further, after the United Arab Emirates, Scholz will go to Doha, where he will meet with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The German chancellor went on a trip to the countries of the Persian Gulf not only to conclude new agreements on the supply of energy resources. Media noted that Scholz hopes to expand cooperation in the field of new technologies. In particular, this applies to the production of environmentally friendly hydrogen, writes Interfax.
