In Paris, a fire at the oldest wholesale market in France, the largest in the world

In France, the world’s largest market, Rungis, is on fire, which can be compared to an entire city, where more than 12,000 people work.

The fire, according to the fire service of Paris, started on Sunday in one of the warehouses. Thick black smoke covered the sky over the French capital. Representatives of emergency services appealed to the Parisians with a request not to leave their homes and not interfere with the passage of fire trucks.

Rungis is located next to Orly airport, so it is possible that the fire will affect air travel schedules.

The world’s largest market employs 12,000 people. In its warehouses – vegetables and fruits, dairy products and meat, seafood and flowers from around the world.

Runji, as he writes Russian newspaper, was founded in the 10th century in the heart of Paris, but in the second half of the last century it was moved to the suburbs due to lack of space. Now the wholesale market has grown to 232 hectares, which is more than the area of the Principality of Monaco (208 hectares). About thirteen thousand people work here, and restaurateurs, hoteliers, and grocery store owners go shopping every day.
