Greece: an unprecedented case of “massive” porn revenge

Videos and photos of 141 girls in their intimate moments are being shared among hundreds of smartphone users in Patras.

According to newspaper “Peloponnisos”, in the messages sent through the application, you can see videos and photos of the girl’s private moments. Either when she is alone in some place, or with a partner.

Unprecedented in relation to this list is that each folder (file) has the full name of the girl. A scientist from Patras, a well-known model from the fashion industry, a city club employee, an employee of the medical office – these are just some of the girls who, without knowing it, were humiliated, and in the most terrible way, through this “list of shame”!

More than 1,000 photos and videos are included in this file, which was not “uploaded” to the internet but “transferred” from mobile to mobile via the “mega play” application used to send large files.

The file has a lot of scenes of public sex, incl. overlooking… the bridge of Rio Antirrio.

Hundreds of people have reportedly already received a “shame list” on their cell phones, and of course some of them… are already humiliating these unsuspecting girls! Some seemed to know they were being filmed or photographed, but others were not.

The same sources told the Peloponnese Monday newspaper that only one of the 141 individuals caught on the video filed lawsuits against individuals who leaked videos of their private moments. This is a girl who works for a well-known chain of cafes in the Agia Sophia area and who was informed about the existence of the video before it was included in the list.

The complexity of the legal solution of the issue with 141 folders lies in the fact that this material was not “placed” on the Internet, but circulates from mobile to mobile! Therefore, finding the original source and proving who distributes it and who received it and uses it for their own purposes is quite difficult, but not impossible.

porn revenge (eng. revenge porn) – posting materials of an openly sexual nature on a publicly accessible network without the consent of the person depicted in them.

Typically, such materials are posted by former partners in revenge (which gave the practice its name) or by hackers who gained unauthorized access to them. Many of these photos and videos are selfies—taken by the person being portrayed. The images are often accompanied by personal information, including full names, addresses, and links to Facebook and other social media profiles.

What’s going on in Greece with revenge porn

Until June 2022, revenge pornography was criminalized by the privacy law, which provided protection, according to Father Konstantinos Kremmidas’ lawyer, but the law required a profit motive to apply the terms of criminal prosecution, making prosecution more difficult.

But since June 2022, changes have been made to the Criminal Code, namely Article 346, and the law provides for punishment of up to 8 years in prison. In particular, one who, without having the right to do so, sends to third parties or places images in a conspicuous place, or places visual and audio-visual materials relating to the public action of a third person with sexual content, is punished with imprisonment for at least 3 years.

This law also applies to those who transmit the same material from mobile to mobile. If this act is posted on the Internet or concerns a minor, then, according to the law, imprisonment for up to 8 years is threatened, and if the victim of this act was brought to a suicide attempt, imprisonment is imposed.

"Porn revenge" and its implications for Stathis Panagiotopoulos

The most famous case of revenge porn in Greece was the story with the host of the program “Radio Arvila” Statis Panagiotopoulos. The presenter (already former) is accused of a sexual crime (“revenge porn”), since facts “surfaced” that, entering into intimate relationships with various girls, he secretly filmed everything on video and then posted it on the Internet. Statis Panagiotopoulos was detained in connection with the accusations received by the police from the victims of “revenge porn”. Now the ex-wife of the TV presenter is demanding compensation for non-pecuniary damage in the amount of 200,000 euros from him.
