On Monday (September 26), NASA’s first “planetary defense” ship will attempt to deflect the asteroid Dimorphos, which is 6.8 million miles from Earth.
A NASA rocket will deliberately collide with an asteroid in an experiment that results in could potentially save the planet from a meteorite impact. The script is reminiscent of the movie “Armageddon”, but it seems that NASA is already ready for any surprises.
NASA launched the DART (Dual Asteroid Redirect Test) mission rocket last November. miles from the earth.
The small asteroid Dimorphos orbits a larger asteroid called Gemini (Didimi). Two meteors will approach the Earth as close as possible at the end of September of this year (about 10.8 million kilometers), having overcome the space of the Universe in how many years, heading towards our planet.
NASA spacecraft impact with asteroid to be streamed live on social media and on the US Space Agency’s YouTube channel.
The Dimorphos impact is part of the US space agency’s first planetary defense test.. Of course, there is no real danger to our planet, but if the experiment is successful, in the future it can pave the way for protecting the planet from the catastrophic fall of the largest meteorites to Earth, thus preventing planetary-scale Armageddon.
Monday, Sept. 26, the #DARTMission will intentionally crash into a non-hazardous asteroid to try to change its orbit. Watch the action live as this #PlanetaryDefense test takes place.
