Free school supplies for 2,858 vulnerable students

The Municipality of Athens ordered the distribution of free school supplies to 2,858 students from vulnerable families. Schoolbags and stationery are distributed daily by the social bookstore at the Mutual Aid Center.

In order to support the poor who find it difficult or simply unable to buy school supplies for their children, the Municipality of Athens has committed itself to covering this basic need.

Providing school supplies to 2,858 children from families supported by the programs of the Reception and Solidarity Center of the Municipality of Athens (KYADA). Every day at the House of Citizens’ Mutual Assistance (Κόμβο Αλληλοβοήθειας Πολιτών), located at Larisa Station, families who have come there with their children receive a briefcase in the social bookstore, as well as a package with notebooks, pens, pencils, crayons, drawing blocks and other things that are necessary for school attendance.

“We recognize the difficulties some of our fellow citizens face in meeting basic needs such as buying school supplies for their children. Through KYADA, we continue our coordinated efforts to provide the best possible living conditions for families who struggle financially on a daily basis and even lack basic necessities. A big ‘thank you’ to all those who contribute in practice to our efforts,” Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis said in a statement.

For her part, KYADA President Melina Daskalaki notes: “Through the Reception and Solidarity Center of the Municipality of Athens, we substantially support citizens in need without discrimination and exclusion. Supporting vulnerable families with children is a key priority, and we are committed to providing them with even more than the bare necessities. As long as the conditions warrant it, we will continue to stand by those who need us with the same solidarity and the same respect.”

In addition, reportedly, this year the Municipality of Athens provides additional learning support to students from economically weak families through the Social Learning Center. Teaching concerns male and female students who attend a gymnasium or lyceum and are citizens or residents of the municipality of Athens.

Classes are held daily from 16:00 to 21:00 in the premises of the 41st Gymnasium of Athens (Patmos 11-13). Registration for those who wish is carried out online or in person at the secretariat of social tutoring (on the 2nd floor of the school building), on weekdays from 15:00 to 21:00.
