In memory of the victims of the September 11 attacks

US President Joe Biden paid tribute to the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks on Sunday.

He took part in the funeral ceremony, writes Deutsche Welle, and laid a wreath at the building of the US Department of Defense – it was there that one of the planes hijacked by terrorists crashed. In his speech, the American president stressed that even after the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan, the United States continues to pursue those responsible for the large-scale terrorist attacks on September 11th. He recalled that in August this year, the US military killed al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri in Kabul:

“We will never forget, we will never give up. Our commitment to preventing another attack on the United States is endless.”

In his speech at the funeral ceremony, which was broadcast live by the White House, Biden called for “guarding democracy.” However, the media note, without harsh language on the eve of the midterm elections:

“It is not enough to advocate for democracy once a year or once in a while. This is what we must do every single day. So this is not only a day of remembrance, but a day of renewal and determination for every American in our dedication to this country, the principles it embodies, our democracy.”

Almost 3,000 people were killed in the September 11, 2001 attacks. The attacks were orchestrated by al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. The planes hijacked by terrorists crashed into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Virginia. Another plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania.

The response to the attack was the beginning of US military operations in Afghanistan. In 2011, as a result of an operation by American special forces, Osama bin Laden was killed in Pakistan. In 2021, the forces of the international coalition left the country, after which the radical Islamist movement “Taliban” established control over Afghanistan.

The September 11, 2001 attacks marked a change in eras. The withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan 20 years later is a confirmation that for the United States domestic political interests are above all, writes D.W.
