Greece opens platform for upgraded Covid-19 vaccines

The platform for vaccinating against Covid-19 with the upgraded vaccines is already open and citizens can get vaccinated as early as Wednesday, September 14, 2022, Maria Theodoridou, president of the Greek National Vaccination Committee, said on Monday.

The recording platform opened on Monday, September 12, the first vaccinations with the updated vaccines will be possible from September 14.

The platform for registering for vaccination with updated vaccines is open to all citizens over 60 years of age. Vaccination will only be given as a single booster (Booster III).

Enhanced vaccines should be given three months after core vaccine revaccination or after confirmed disease. If someone has received the 4th dose and subsequently becomes ill, there is no need for a 5th dose.

The Vaccination Committee will make a final decision on the group eligible for the 5th shot tomorrow, Tuesday, however Theodoridou said that this group will concern:

  • all persons over 60 years of age.
  • persons aged 12-15 who belong to high-risk groups
  • medical workers
  • guardians

These vaccines are based on the mRNA version and based on clinical studies, they cause an increase in antibodies and fight the Omicron O1, O2, O2,7 and O5 sub-variants.

It should be noted that they have been approved for use in children 12 years of age and older and are intended for use as a booster dose only, regardless of the type of vaccine given at the primary vaccination. For those who have not been vaccinated so far, the core vaccines will need to be administered first, followed by the updated ones.

The platform for making an appointment for updated vaccines is here at emvolio.gov.gr.

At the same briefing on Monday, Primary Health Care Secretary General Marios Themistocleous said the platform would be open to all booster recipients. From now on, the base regimen will be carried out using previous vaccines, and booster doses will be carried out with updated vaccines.

In the platform system, the type of vaccines will be marked Pfizer and updated Pfizer BA.1 .

Those citizens who have signed up for a second dose of the original type of vaccine can reschedule their appointments to receive updated ones.

It should be noted that Greece has already bought new vaccines, the number of which is estimated at more than 500,000 pieces.
