“My body, my choice”: a rally at the doors of the Athens Metropolis

A public demonstration in defense of the right to abortion was held by women activists in the square in front of the Athens metropolis in the early morning of Thursday 8 September.

Women’s rights organizations called for a rally in connection with with the decision of the Holy Synod to read out today in the churches a circular on the “protection of human life and the prevention of abortion.”

Early in the morning, women gathered with banners and posters at the Metropolis of Athens and shouted protest slogans. “My body, my choice,” read the text on one of the posters held by the protesters. “My decision to have an abortion or give birth, what I do with my body, does not concern anyone,” it was written on another.

“Separation of the church-state now”, “My womb is not a machine for the reproduction of the nation, it is not for you to tell me whether to be a mother to me”, “My body, my life, my choice”, “There is no need to return to the religious Middle Ages”, “Sexual education in every school” and “End the obscurantism of the church” are some of the slogans on the posters held by the audience.
