Digital technologies against cigarette butts

Cigarette Cycle protects the environment by activating an innovative process for collecting cigarette butts for recycling through digital technology.

The 2nd Digital Beach Summit, held at Monolithi Beach in Preveza on September 1 and 2, 2022, introduced the #gopafree cigarette butt collection and recycling pilot program operated by Cigarette Cycle AMKE.

The conference presented for the first time the innovative plan of the Thessaloniki-based DT&S Digital Transformation and Skills Center, which aims to protect the environment and practically support the environmentally harmful cigarette collection and recycling program.

With the support of IoTECH Communications, a company with applied experience in implementing digital transformation programs (Ψηφιακού Μετασχηματισμού) has created a special collection and recycling container equipped with an IoT (Internet of Things) system.

Now equipped with a smart special container for collecting cigarette butts, via the LoRaWan network, data on the number of collected cigarette butts will be sent to the central control program in order to optimize the frequency of their collection, as well as to avoid possible container overflow.

In addition, with the help of this program it will be possible to present data on the contribution of each bin to the final product of processing over a certain period of time, as well as on the impact on the environment. An innovation that turns a special bin for collecting and recycling cigarette butts into a smart system will be presented at the Beyond Expo Innovation and Digital Technologies exhibition, which will be held in Thessaloniki from 29 to 2 October 2022.
