Zitsa: the battle to save the wounded donkey. What the veterinarians say

Animal lovers fight to save a donkey that was bullied by the deputy mayor of the municipality of Zica.

As we reported earlier, the deputy mayor mistreated his donkey by tying it to the bumper of a car and dragging the animal along the asphalt for more than 700 meters, causing severe injuries to the animal. It was assumed that the owner killed the animal, but later the donkey was found alive, albeit in a deplorable state.

President of the local charity ΚΙ.ΔΙ.ΖΩ. Evangelia Cristalli stated that on August 30, she asked that the donkey be examined by their own specialist veterinarian in Ioannina to assess its health so that, with proper care, efforts can be made to keep it alive. Her request was accepted with the consent of the 63-year-old owner.

Initially, the animal was examined by the veterinary service and it was found that it had a fracture in the lower leg, as well as bite marks from a wild animal or a wolf (which the former vice mayor himself supported in his statement), and the insides found on the farm did not belong to donkey, but to another large animal.

According to Mrs. Cristalli, the animal is in pain, and the veterinarian from Zica, who examined him, asked to be euthanized, as he could not treat him. At the same time, he gave all the details about the incident and the actions that were taken as soon as they became known.

Today is ΚΙ.ΔΙ.ΖΩ. posted on her Facebook page about the tragic incident that took place on Saturday afternoon in the village of Grammeno in the municipality of Zitsa, stating that a request had been received to transfer the donkey to Megara (Attica). More details in the message ΚΙ.ΔΙ.ΖΩ. says:

Our hearts sank at the sight of the helpless animal lying in the straw. The donkey has serious injuries all over his body. He has extensive and deep wounds to his sternum from being dragged (along the way), as well as all over his torso and limbs, and his leg is broken. With all these injuries, he receives a double dose of antibiotics and painkillers. We are in contact with doctors to do everything possible for the unfortunate animal.

The veterinarian confirmed that the wounds in the photographs (wounds/burns) are the same as those of the animal that was dragged along the road. The entrails found have NOTHING to do with this donkey or any other horse. This was confirmed by a veterinarian and a horse doctor. A request has been made for the removal of the animal, and with good reason, the donkey will be transferred as soon as possible to Megara, where he will be given the care he deserves.

Finally we contacted the medical examiner and they told us how to take a DNA sample from the blood on the pavement and from the donkey to be 100% sure.

Thanks to everyone who cared about this creature!

Thanks to all these people who are morally on our side! It’s priceless for all of us.”
