Double seismic shock, 4.9 + 5.2 points, near Samos

Another earthquake, this time with a magnitude of 5.2 on the Richter scale, hit Samos on 31 August at 13:10 pm. The epicenter is located at a distance of 17 km from Pythagorion.

The depth of the outbreak is estimated at 10 kilometers.

The previous shock, which occurred 14 minutes earlier, at 12:56 pm, was rated at 4.9 on the Richter scale by the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC).

In an interview with journalists, the mayor of western Samos Alexandros Limberis said the quakes occurred in a short amount of time and were particularly noticeable, but added: “We experienced a 7 on the Richter scale two years ago, and today’s quakes seem … small in comparison.”

The mayor noted that there was no panic: “All utilities and buildings were immediately closed, and now we are leaving with teams to assess the situation. The first general picture shows that there are no serious damages and problems on the island, but, as I said, we are now leaving for an inspection. Local authorities are now in full readiness throughout the island. Seismologists don’t know if the 5.2 magnitude quake is major, so we’re on our guard.”
