Greece: new school year without masks and Covid tests

The academic year 2022-2023 in Greece will start on September 12 without masks and Covid tests for teachers and studentsthe health minister said on Monday.

Masks will not be required in schools, despite the fact that the rate of coronavirus infection remains high. “We want schools to operate very close to normal,” Health Minister Thanos Plevris said on Monday. “I believe that wearing masks should remain a recommendation, not a requirement.”

The minister has ruled out routine coronavirus testing for students and staff in favor of “targeted” testing for Covid-19. Education Minister Niki Kerameos made a similar statement a day earlier.

However, as reported, a meeting of the country’s pandemic experts is scheduled this week to decide what measures should be implemented in schools. Minister Plevris has repeatedly said in the recent past: “We do not want to introduce additional measures [против Covid-19]. Any new measures must be lenient.”

At its weekly briefing last Tuesday, the Greek National Health Organization EODY announced 55,769 confirmed cases of coronavirus infection in the 33rd week of 2022.

PS It’s clearly going to the elections…
