The first “smart” traffic light in Greece

In Greece, the first “smart” traffic light has been installed and is successfully operating, which automatically detects offenses – vehicles passing on a red signal.

In our country, “smart” traffic lights have finally begun to appear in order to improve traffic and increase the level of safety by “detecting” violating drivers. The first one has already been started and put into operation on Alimos, at the intersection of Poseidonos Avenue with Kalamakiou (on the side leading towards Piraeus).

The traffic light in question, which is currently controlled by the Attica region, is connected to a camera located at a higher point. The camera “knows” when the traffic light is “red” and therefore photographs the license plates of cars whose drivers violate it.

The recording system has the ability store six consecutive photos. She is simultaneously stores “in memory” two black-and-white photographs of the license plate of the vehicle, and also has the ability to record and store a short video that shows the violation from beginning to end – in case it is challenged by the driver who committed the violation. Then the specified material is sent to the competent authorities, which initiate procedures for issuing a fine to the car owner.

According to the information, the “smart” traffic light has a “heavy load” because registers hundreds of relevant violations daily. It is no coincidence that it is located exactly at the point (in both streams) where many drivers choose to run a red light every day. Fortunately or unfortunately, while his work is pilot (experimental)and recorded violations are virtual, thereby enabling road users to be aware of the existence of the system and drive more prudently.

The goal of the Attica Region, once the evaluation of the system is completed, is to extend it to other parts of the urban road network in order to improve road safety.
