“Hot” August for tourism: 1 million tourists a week come to Greece

Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias announced a 17% increase in tourist arrivals this year compared to 2019, in particular to the islands of the southeastern Aegean region.

“During the first week of August in our flagship islands of the southeastern Aegean, which account for the bulk of the tourism pie, we have a 17% increase in arrivals this year compared to 2019. We now estimate that 1 million tourists a week come to Greece,” said Mr. Kikilias. “The nationwide short-term rental data platform AirDNA estimated the number of bookings in July, August and September this year to be 26.5% higher than in the record-breaking 2019,” he said.

We aim for the tourist season to end in December, says Vassilis Kikilias. “We started the tourist season at the beginning of this year, from March, and aim to finish it in December,” the Minister of Tourism said in a program on the Σκάι channel, when asked about extension of the tourist season.

“Despite the energy crisis, the pandemic, monkeypox, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, we not only survived, but also showed a significant economic surplus,” the Minister of Tourism stressed.
