40 illegal migrants found in Greece, they are detained

Yesterday, four kilometers south of the island, located on the Turkish side, the Greek authorities detained 40 migrants. An investigation is underway to establish how and when they entered Greek territory.

Among the migrants, there are believed to be refugees who need immediate assistance. From the first minute, the Minister for the Protection of Citizens, Takis Theodorikakos, has been following the developments. He ordered the intensification of the investigation, being in constant contact with the head ΕΛ.ΑΣ.

In the 24 hours prior to the incident, the headquarters issued two announcements stating that the island near which the migrants were detained was on Turkish territory. Therefore, the Greek authorities did not have the opportunity to provide any assistance to the forty migrants who were there.

Earlier it became known that on the island where the migrants were, a 5-year-old refugee child died from a scorpion sting and has been without burial for several days. ΕΛ.ΑΣ. informed Turkey that the facility was outside Greek territory. In a press release, ΕΛ.ΑΣ. says:

“In connection with reports of the presence of immigrants on the island of Evros, the Hellenic Police Directorate clarifies the following. From the first moment when information about the possible presence of migrants on the islet of Evros appeared, the Greek police carried out successive investigations, using all suitable technical means, without detecting the presence of people. At the same time, the coordinates were transferred to the competent services of the armed forces, who indicated that this was a point outside the territory of Greece.

Subsequently, ΕΛ.ΑΣ. held two briefings on triangular cooperation. It is noted that always and every day the forces of ΕΛ.ΑΣ. protect Greek and European borders and, of course, human life, which is of paramount value.

At the same time, Rania Svigu (SYRIZA) called for an immediate solution to the problem of a five-year-old refugee child who had been without burial for several days on an island in Evros, and laid the blame on EL.AS., which disclaims responsibility, stating that the island on which the 5-year-old child is located is in Turkish territory. She stressed that the government cannot continue to stand by “this scene of an ancient tragedy at our borders.”

She also stated that it is necessary to immediately contact the European authorities and the Turkish side so that a solution can be found as soon as possible. newsbeast.gr.
