Greek Armed Forces on high alert

For three days, starting on August 14, the Greek Armed Forces introduced a high alert regime.

Sources in the country’s Ministry of Defense explain this decision by the need to be prepared for clashes with Turkey, writes Ta Nea. It is assumed that Ankara can arrange provocations and clashes on the Day of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Nikos Panagiotopoulos, Minister of National Defense of Greece, will be on the island of Tinos these days. The readiness plan, the newspaper writes, is under the full control of the minister.

The task of the Ministry of Defense is to have people in case of emergency who are able to effectively deal with any situation responsibly, calmly, and quickly. The defense ministry does not consider it possible to relax, given the continued tension, in particular, in connection with migrants on the Greek-Turkish border and in connection with Turkey’s statements that Greece continues to provide asylum to members of organizations recognized as terrorist in Turkey, writes GreekReporter.

Turkey continues threatening rhetoric towards Greece. In early August, Hulusi Akar, Turkish Defense Minister, declaredthat Ankara is ready to take “preemptive action” if Greece does not comply with the requirements for the demilitarization of the islands in the eastern Aegean. This is not the first attack of the Turkish government towards Greece. Earlier, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President of Turkey, accused Athens of violating the Lausanne Peace Treaty, saying that the Greek authorities were infringing on the rights of the Turkish national minority.
