More than 2,700 drivers were found driving under the influence of alcohol during checks carried out by the police in eight prefectures of the regions of Western Greece and the Peloponnese in the first seven months of 2022. Over the same period of time, about 115,000 traffic violations were confirmed in both regions.
According to official police figures released by the Athens Macedonian News Agency, in the first seven months of 2022, in the prefectures of Achaia, Etoloakarnania and Ilia, in the region of Western Greece, 1,140 drivers were “seen” intoxicated. The largest number of violations, which reached 196, was confirmed in May last year, and the smallest – 130 – in March 2021.
In the prefectures of Argolis, Arcadia, Corinthia, Laconia and Messinia in the Peloponnese region, more than 87,500 breathalyzer tests were carried out in the first seven months of 2022, during which about 1,600 drivers were identified as intoxicated.
The largest number of violations, namely 482, was confirmed in April last year, and the smallest, 113, in January.
Meanwhile, in the context of police checks to ensure traffic safety on the roads of the country, in the first seven months of 2022, about 62,350 violations were confirmed in the three prefectures of Western Greece. Most of them, ie 10,827, related to speeding, 3,414 to riding with seat belts fastened, and another 2,305 to non-use of helmets by motorcycle riders and passengers.
In the five prefectures of the Peloponnese region, approximately 53,000 traffic violations were confirmed during the same period. Most of them, 12,730, are related to speeding, another 1,704 – driving without a helmet, and 1,289 – non-use of seat belts by vehicle drivers.
It should be noted that most traffic violations, both in Western Greece and in the Peloponnese, were recorded in May last year. In particular, in Western Greece there are 10,183 violations, and in the Peloponnese – 8546. The smallest number of violations was recorded in Western Greece in February (7372) and in the Peloponnese in January (6081).
In the first seven months of 2022, in the region of Western Greece, according to police, 1352 vehicles were found to have committed various kinds of violations, and in the Peloponnese their number reached 903.
During the same period, 206 drivers were found talking on a mobile phone while driving in Western Greece, while the corresponding number of offenders in the Peloponnese reached 403.
