“Rushdie was stabbed in the neck and was taken by helicopter to the hospital. His condition is still unknown,” the statement said.
Salman Rushdie was born in India and rose to fame with the release of The Satanic Verses in the UK in 1988. His books are banned in India, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Somalia and several other countries. Iranian leader Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa (decree) calling on Muslims to execute all those involved in the release of the book, and an Iranian religious foundation announced a reward for the murder of Rushdie. In 1990, the writer publicly apologized, the fatwa was not canceled. In Western countries, arson and attacks on stores selling “Satanic Verses” were recorded, in Japan the author of their translation was killed.
In 2007, Rushdie was knighted by Elizabeth II for services to literature. In July 2008, he received the Best Booker Award for Midnight’s Children.
The situation around Rushdie led the UK and Iran to break off diplomatic relations in March 1989, and since then Rushdie has been forced to live under police protection. Nine years later, relations between the countries were restored, but Iran said that it would neither fulfill nor cancel the fatwa.
It is known that so far one Iranian Islamic fund promises $3.3 million for Rushdie’s head…
