Central Market: “surprise” with discounts on essential goods

According to the Central Market of Athens (KAA), wholesale prices for some basic agricultural products are falling.

It may come as a surprise amid the price flurry hitting households, but some staples are being sold at significantly lower prices than last year. Adonis Georgiadis posted the corresponding pricing table on social media, noting that “with hard work, the result will come.” This applies, for example, to products such as tomatoes, lemons, lettuce, reports dikaiologitika.gr.

The wholesale price of lemons has fallen by 31% compared to August last year. This year, the fruit sells for between 0.95 and 1.10 euros per kilogram, up from 1.50 to 1.60 euros per kilogram last year.

The wholesale price of tomatoes has fallen by 15%, and they are now sold at prices ranging from 0.70 to 1.10 euros per kilogram, while in August last year they were sold at 1.30 euros.

The price of lettuce (maruli) has fallen by up to 43%, as according to August this year, it is sold in bulk from 0.35 to 0.40 euros, while last year it was 0.70 euros in the same month.

Red and green leafy greens (λόλες, κόκκινες και πράσινες) today sell for between 0.40 and 0.45 euros per kilo. Whereas last year at this time they cost from 0.70 to 0.75 euros per kilogram. In other words, the wholesale price has been reduced by up to 40%.

It is noted that a significant share of domestic fruits and vegetables sold in the Central Market of Athens covers most of the demand of urban centers and tourist destinations.
