Greece weather warning: rain, thunderstorms and hail in mid-August

The Greek National Meteorological Service EMY has issued an emergency bulletin warning of bad weather with rain, thunderstorms and even hail.

The warning is valid for the next three days, August 12-14, 2022, with the peak of bad weather predicted on Sunday, with a high frequency of thunderstorms and hail.

According to the weather service National Observatory of Athens, weather deterioration is forecast to begin from noon on Thursday 11 August, with rain in Macedonia and East Thessaly. The phenomena will intensify with local storms in a significant part of the central and northern parts of the mainland. During the night, phenomena will continue locally in Macedonia, North Thessaly, Epirus and possibly the northern Aegean.

The weather is expected to improve on Monday 15 August when the weather improves and temperatures rise again. Regions in Central, Northern and Western Greece will be particularly affected.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms since Friday morning in places in central Macedonia. Local rains in western Macedonia, Epirus, Thessaly, western and central parts of western and central Greece (mainly in Atoloakarnania and Evrytania). At night, phenomena will weaken.

Saturday, August 13

Heavy rain and thunderstorms in places in Macedonia, Thessaly and the Ionian Islands. Intense weather events will continue in Macedonia into Sunday night.

Sunday, August 14

Heavy rains and thunderstorms in Thessaly, central and eastern Macedonia, Thrace, the Sporades, the eastern part of the mainland (including Attica), Evia and the northeastern islands of the Aegean Sea. Rain is also possible in Athens. But its probability is low.

Monday, August 15

Intense weather events will be limited to the northeast, i.e. Thrace and the islands of the northeast Aegean. In all other areas the weather will improve.

The air temperature in Athens and its environs during the day is from 32°С to 37°С, at night from 23°С to 28°С. The water temperature in the vicinity of Athens is 25-27°C.
