ΕΛΣΤΑΤ: mortality increased in the country in the first half of the year

According to ΕΛΣΤΑΤ the number of deaths in the country, including in connection with the Covid-19 pandemic, for the first 26 weeks of this year (01/03/2022-07/03/2022) increased by 4478 or 6.46% and amounted to 73,835 (37,126 men and 36,709 women).

For the corresponding period of 2021 (01/04/2021 – 07/04/2021), 69,357 people (35,569 men and 33,788 women) died. According to the statistical office, there was an increase of 9,480 deaths (14.73%) compared to the average for the first 26 weeks of the six-year period 2016-2021. (64,355 deaths).

Relevant figures for the period 2016-2021:

  • 7.52% in 2021 compared to 2020 (64,506 deaths),
  • -1.51% in 2020 compared to 2019 (65,495 deaths),
  • 8.05% in 2019 compared to 2018 (60,616 deaths),
  • -7.82% in 2018 compared to 2017 (65,756 deaths),
  • 8.87% in 2017 compared to 2016 (60,399 deaths).

The largest increase was recorded in week 5 (31/01/2022–06/02/2022), week 4 (24/01/2022–30/01/2022) and week 2 (10/01/2022–16/01/2022): by 42.6%, 40.3 % and 35.2% respectively. The most significant reductions were registered on the 18th (05/02/2022 – 05/08/2022), 26th (06/27/2022 – 07/03/2022) and 25th (06/20/2022 – 06/26/2022) weeks, by 20.6 %, 20.1% and 16.5% respectively.

According to age groups, it is noted that in absolute terms, mortality was higher, mainly in the age groups over 90 years (2454 deaths), from 85 to 89 years (1559 deaths), from 75 to 79 years (745 deaths) and from 80 to 84 years (252 deaths).

At the same time, fewer deaths were recorded mainly in the age groups from 70 to 74 years (253 deaths), from 60 to 64 years (77 deaths) and from 50 to 54 years (60 deaths).

At the place of permanent residence of the deceased, it is observed increase in mortality in 12 regions of the country and decline in one. The largest increase was recorded in the regions of Attica, Peloponnese and Western Greece with 754, 711 and 625 deaths respectively, while a decrease was noted in Thessaly.
